A super middleweight title eliminator finished in the most anticlimactic of ways: a no decision after two rounds.
Former world champions Peter Quillin and Caleb Truax had their fight end after a clash of heads that left Truax unable to continue fighting. The fight, which main evented a PBC on FS1 card from Minnesota, was supposed to crown a new mandatory challenger for Caleb Plant’s IBF title.
Truax suffered a deep cut above his right eye midway through the second round from an accidental head butt. While he was able to finish the round, upon returning to his corner, the ringside doctor recommended stopping the bout. Because four rounds had not been completed, the fight was ruled a no decision one second into round three. Quillin won both rounds on all three judges' scorecards.
Also on the card was an IBF middleweight title eliminator between Sergiy Derevyanchenko and Jack Culcay. That fight did have a definitive conclusion as Derevyanchenko came out on top with a fairly close unanimous decision win (116-112, 116-112, 115-113).
Derevyanchenko becomes the new mandatory challenger for the title currently being held by Daniel Jacobs. Derevyanchenko could get an even bigger fight down the road as Jacobs is facing Canelo Alvarez on May 4 in a WBA, WBC and IBF title unification. Should Derevyanchenko fight the winner of Canelo-Jacobs next, he could potentially have a shot at winning three world titles in one night. Derevyanchenko had fought Jacobs for the then-vacant belt last October in New York, but Jacobs managed to barely win the title by split decision.
