Report: Erislandy Lara Returning To The Ring In August

Former world champion Erislandy Lara will reportedly return to the ring in late August and he will be facing a boxer with the last name Alvarez, but it's not the one most people automatically think of.

An article from Cuban publication El Nuevo Herald stated that Lara will face someone related to Canelo Alvarez on August 31. The article quoted Lara saying that he will face Canelo's brother, but doesn't know the fighters' first name, yet the article speculates that he is referring to Ramon Alvarez, Canelo's older brother. No location was mentioned in the article.

"Supposedly I'm fighting on August 31 against Canelo's brother. I don't know what his name is, but I do know that it is an Alvarez so we will start training for that fight soon," Lara said.

If Ramon is the Alvarez brother Lara is referring to, it would be his first fight since winning a split decision against Jose Carlos Paz back on April 6 in Mexico. Ramon has faced a number of notable boxers throughout his career, including Antonio Margarito and Brandon Rios. Sporting a 28-7-3 pro record, Ramon has won a number of regional titles such as the NABF and IBF North American junior middleweight titles.

Lara, a former WBA junior middleweight world champion, has not won his last two fights, both title bouts. Lara lost a title unification against Jarrett Hurd back in 2018 and then was inactive for the remainder of the year. He returned to the ring in March, fighting Brian Castano to a draw with the WBA "Regular" junior middleweight title on the line.
