Play-by-Play

Islam Makhachev (C) vs. Alexander Volkanovski (C) — UFC Lightweight Championship

Round One - Islam lands a side kick to the body to start. Volk rips a right hook to the body and just missed a left hook up top. Volk lands a 1-2 and continues to march forward. Volk is landing to both the head and body and it's a great start for the 145-pound champion. Volk lands a left hook but Islam stuns Volk with a left hook then a 1-2 and latches onto Volk with the clinch. Volk holds firm for the moment and Islam is riding his back looking for the takedown. Islam trips Volk and partially has the back as Volk scoots back to the fence. Volk lands a punch over his shoulder and Islam is looking for the neck. Islam adjusts and locks in a neck crank but Volk is doing a good job of defending thus far. Volk fights the hands and isn't in much danger and rides out the final 10-seconds until the buzzer sounds, which ends the opening frame.

Round Two - Volk rips a right hook to the body to open the action. Volk drops Islam with a left hook but Islam latches onto the ankle and drags Volk to the mat! Islam looks for the back but Volk finds his way back to the feet. Islam remains clinched and has Volk against the fence and trips him back down to the mat. Volk scrambles and gets right back up and lands a step in knee to the body. Islam clinches again but Volk reverses momentum and now has Islam against the fence. Volk lands a low kick and a 1-2 before landing another low kick. Islam cracks Volk with a left hook and de-facto challenger is hurt! Despite being rocked, Volk continues to be the aggressor and rips a right hook to the body and a follow up low kick. Volk clinches Islam against the fence this time. Both competitors land a few decent shots whilst clinched up but nothing of consequence lands and the horn sounds to send this one to round number three.

Fightful scores this round 10-9 to Makhachev. 20-18 to Makhachev after two rounds.

Round Three - Volk opens the action with a right hook. Volk rips a right hook to the body, Islam tries to clinch but Volk shoves him back. Volk lands a low kick followed by a left hook up top and Islam drills Volk with a right hook. Volk lands a stiff low kick and a straight right back up top. Islam clinches and trips Volk to the mat but Volk pops right back up. Islam is relentless and shoves Volk back down to the mat and looks for the back. Islam looks for the choke but Volk uses it to get back to his feet. Volk now has Islam clinched against the fence but lets go and lands a 1-2 on the break. Volk lands a 1-2 and sweeps Islam to the mat but the champion pops right back to his feet. Volk is letting his hands go and lands a wild 1-2 then trips Islam to the mat. Both competitors scramble back to their feet but the buzzer sounds and this one is headed to the championship rounds.

Fightful scores this round 10-9 to Volkanovski. 29-28 to Makhachev after three rounds.

Round Four - Volk opens the championship rounds with a low kick. Volk lands a left hook and Islam pops the jab. Volk continues his march forward and lands a 1-2 but Islam dives in and secures a perfectly timed takedown. Volk scoots to the fence but Islam is able to get the back and has the body triangle locked in. Volk does a good job to tuck the neck thus far and starts throwing wild punches behind his head. Referee Marc Goddard comes over and warns Islam to start working or he'll stand them up. Volk is talking to Islam and throwing punches over his head and Islam isn't doing much other than holding his position. Volk is loudly yelling at Islam while landing these wild overhead punches and the crowd is going absolutely ballistic as the horn sounds and this one is headed to the fifth and final round.

Round Five - Volk lands a right hook to open the final frame. Islam clinches but Volk lands a 1-2 and Islam lets go and circles back to the center of the octagon. Islam dives in and takes Volk down but the challenger pops right back up to his feet and forces a break from Islam's ensuing clinch. Volk has a cut on the left corner of his left eye but it doesn't seem to be bothering him much at this point. Islam ankle picks Volk but Volk rolls and ends up with partial top control in an odd sprawl position. Islam latches onto the leg but Volk breaks off and stands back up with two minutes to go in this one! Volk clinches and cracks Islam with a left hook. Islam looks a bit gassed and Volk clinches and trips Islam to the mat. The champion pops right back up with under 90-seconds to go! Volk rocks Islam with a right hook and the champion is down! Volk jumps on top and starts ripping left and rights to the body as the final 30-seconds approach! Volk stands up and starts dropping hammers on Islam but the champion survives until the buzzer and this one is headed to the judge's scorecards! What a fight!

(#2) Yair Rodriguez vs. (#5) Josh Emmett — Interim UFC Featherweight Championship

Round One - Rodriguez partially lands a front kick to start. Rodriguez lands a low kick, then goes back upstairs, then to the body. What a start for Rodriguez, who's the clear aggressor through the first 90-seconds of this one. Rodriguez lands another low kick, then a side kick to the body and a 1-2 back up top. Rodriguez is FEELING it right now. Emmett starts throwing fire but nothing lands as of now. Emmett fakes a level change and cracks Rodriguez with a right hook. Rodriguez lands a high kick, then a left hook but Emmett drops Rodriguez with a right hook! Emmett jumps on top and starts throwing hammers from the top, Rodriguez rolls to his stomach and Emmett continues the ground and pound. Rodriguez looks for an armbar from the bottom but Emmett escapes trouble and transitions to side control. Emmett lands a slicing elbow from the top and continues the heavy shots, Rodriguez is hurt but starts throwing side punches from the bottom but the buzzer sounds and a wild opening frame comes to a close.

Round Two - Emmett stuns Rodriguez with a 1-2 but Rodriguez lands a thunderous pair of side kicks to the body and Emmett dives in for a takedown but Rodriguez slides out of the way. Rodriguez is throwing endless kicks to the body and seemingly every single one is landing. Emmett clinches and presses Rodriguez against the fence. Rodriguez slides off the fence and lands a step in knee to the body. Rodriguez continues to go to the well with body kicks, Emmett has a cut on the left corner of his left eye but he's swinging for the bleachers with right hooks. A head kick and right hook combo both lands for Rodriguez and Rodriguez leaps for a flying knee but Emmett catches it and drops Rodriguez to the mat with a takedown! Emmett settles into top control with about 90-seconds to work. Rodriguez lands an elbow from the bottom and Emmett is getting beat up a little bit here. Rodriguez sinks in a traingle out of nowhere and Emmett taps out! Yair Rodriguez is the Interim UFC Featherweight Champion!

Jack Della Maddalena vs. Randy Brown

Round One - Brown opens up the action with a left hook. JDM lands a calf kick, then another and Brown fires off a kick right up the middle to the body. Brown pops the jab, JDM lands a low kick, and Brown counters with a left hook. Brown lands a 1-2, then a kick up the middle, and rips a right hook to the body. Brown with yet another front kick to the body but JDM cracks brown with a right hook and Brown is down! JDM rushes over and starts firing down the ground and pound, sneaks in the arm under the neck and locks in the rear-naked choke and Brown has no choice but to tap! What a comeback by Jack Della Maddalena!

Result: Jack Della Maddalena def. Randy Brown via submission (rear-naked choke) (2:13, R1)

Justin Tafa vs. Parker Porter

Round One - Porter opens up with a 1-2. Porter lands a low kick, then another 1-2. Porter continues his push forward but he walks into a massive straight left from Tafa and an uppercut lands on the way down and Porter is out! What a KO by Justin Tafa!

Result: Justin Tafa def. Parker Porter via KO (punch) (1:06, R1)

(#12) Jimmy Crute vs. Alonzo Menifield

Round One - Crute looks for a takedown right off the bat and gets it. Menifield scrambles but Crute holds firm for the time being. Menifield is able to scoot himself to the fence to get back to his feet but Crute quickly trips him back down to the mat. Menifield scrambles his way back up but Crute is able to secure yet another takedown. Crute looks for the guillotine but Menifield defends well and uses it to get back to his feet. Menifield stuns Crute with a massive left hook but Crute comes back with a head kick and slips to the mat. Menifield jumps on top and starts firing down some heavy shots. Crute is hurt but somehow gets back to his feet at the horn, which ends a wild opening frame.

Fightful scores this round 10-9 to Menifield.

Round Two - Menifield wallops Crute right as the round begins and Crute buckles to his knees. Menifield shoves Crute back and ends up with top control and starts letting the shots fly. Crute is hurt pretty bad form the looks of it but somehow scrambles to his feet. Menifield peppers in the jab, Crute lands a step in knee to the body and lands a perfectly timed takedown. Crute doesn't do much with top control but sneaks in a rear-naked choke but the horn sounds to save Menifield from any trouble.

Fightful scores this round 10-9 to Menifield. 20-18 to Menifield after two rounds.

Round Three - Menifield cracks Crute with a right hook to start. Menifield stymies a takedown attempt from Crute, who clinches with Menifield and goes for another takedown but Menifield grabs the cage and referee Marc Goddard steps in and takes a point away from Menifield. Massive. The position is reset and we're back underway. Crute lands a takedown and smothers him until Menifield finally scrambles back up but Crute isn't letting go and clinches until the buzzer sounds to end an entertaining opening main card bout.
