Stephen Thompson Never Saw The Shot That Took Him Out

Stephen Thompson competed in the main event of UFC Fight Night Nashville, suffering a second round knockout loss to former UFC Lightweight Champion Anthony Pettis.

If the knockout loss wasn’t bad enough for Thompson, it was a fight ending blow the fighter never saw coming.

Unranked UFC Fighters to Watch out for in 2024

“After 80 fights I’ve never been KO’d – this time by a small guy,” Thompson said on Facebook Live (via Mike Bohn of MMA Junkie). “I can’t believe he got me with the Superman punch. Golly. Superman off the cage. It was so ninja I didn’t even see it coming.”

The loss was the first time Thompson has been knocked out in his professional MMA career, as the fighters other three professional MMA defeats came by way of decision.

A defeated Thompson was hoping to fight in his home state of South Carolina at UFC Fight Night Greenville next, but the loss compounded with a potential medical suspension may hamper those plans.

“Looks like I’m not going to be fighting in freakin’ Greenville,” Thompson said. “This sucks.”

Pettis, who had previously competed at both lightweight and featherweight in his professional MMA career, was competing for the first time in the welterweight division at UFC Fight Night Nashville.
