IBF super featherweight champion Tevin Farmer is not overlooking James Tennyson ahead of their world title fight on October 20, but that doesn't mean Farmer isn't thinking of another champion.
Days before Farmer defends his title against Tennyson on the Matchroom Boxing card in Boston on October 20, the IBF champion said he wants to face off against WBA champion and rival Gervonta Davis.
“I want to fight Gervonta Davis. I have a title, I have a great contract, so I don't need him - but I have to have that fight. There's been a lot of talking but I am about handling business. We've talked enough, I want the fight so let's make it happen," Farmer said in a press release.
The two boxers have been linked to a fight since last year as Farmer was among the top contenders for the IBF title Davis held in 2017. Once Davis was stripped of the title for missing weight ahead of a title defense, Farmer was put in place to fight for the vacant belt. Unfortunately for Farmer, he lost to Kenichi Ogawa last December with a controversial decision. Afterwards, it was revealed that Ogawa failed a drug test, meaning the belt was once again vacant.
While Farmer would spend the first half of 2018 looking to see if and when he gets another shot at the IBF title, Davis would go on to win the WBA "super" 135-pound championship in April. Farmer would then win the vacant IBF title in August against Billy Dib, potentially setting up a unification fight that has been a year in the making. Farmer would then move on to the Tennyson fight while in the meantime, Davis would stay idle, waiting for when he will get to make his first world title defense.
