UFC 242 Headliners Agree That Tony Ferguson Should Be Next

UFC Lightweight Champion Khabib Nurmagomedov and UFC Interim Lightweight Champion Dustin Poirier will meet in the main event of UFC 242.

If there is one thing that Nurmagomedov and Poirier can agree on, it is that former UFC Interim Lightweight Champion Tony Ferguson should get the next title shot.

“Only Tony Ferguson,” Nurmagomedov said during a UFC 242 teleconference (via Steven Marrocco of MMA Junkie). “I think he deserves it. Who else is there? Nobody. Only Tony Ferguson, or nothing.”

Nurmagomedov and Ferguson have been scheduled to meet multiple times in the UFC, but the bouts between them always fell apart.

Poirier, who holds the title once held by Ferguson, agrees that the former interim lightweight champion should be next.

“One hundred percent it’s Tony Ferguson without a second guess,” Poirier said. “Without any bargaining, it’s Tony Ferguson. No doubt.”

UFC 242 takes place on Saturday, September 7 from The Arena at Yas Island, Abu Dhabi with Khabib Nurmagomedov and Dustin Poirier headlining. Fightful is going to be providing live coverage of the event, with a post-show podcast to follow.
