Luis Nery?s WBC suspension has been lifted and is now back on the path to reclaim his bantamweight world title.
The WBC recently announced that Nery?s suspension ended on September 1 and is eligible to fight for any WBC title. As such, Nery?s next fight has been announced: a bout against Jason Canoy on October 6 for the WBC Silver bantamweight title.
Nery won the title back in 2017 against Shinsuke Yamanaka in Japan, but Nery tested positive for the banned substance Zilpaterol. In exchange for keeping the title, Nery had to fight Yamanaka in a rematch.
The suspension handed to Nery was a result of the Mexican coming in massively overweight for a title defense against Yamanaka. Nery was stripped of the title, but the fight went on as planned and Nery quickly dispatched Yamanaka, stopping him in two rounds. Since then, Yamanaka has retired from the sport. Nery was then suspended six months by the WBC retroactive to the date of the rematch against Yamanaka, which was March 1.
The WBC Silver was last held by Nordine Oubaali, but the title now sits vacant as Oubaali appears to be headed towards a clash against Rau?shee Warren for the vacant WBC world title.
Canoy, a 27-8-2 fighter from the Philippines, has not fought since February, when he lost a unanimous decision against Hiroaki Teshigawara for the WBO Asia Pacific bantamweight title. Canoy sports a 3-2 record in his last five fights.
Nery was actually booked to fight on June 9, but was immediately taken out of the fight after the WBC found out about the fight and would not sanction the fight due to him being suspended at the time.
