Yoel Romero Claims UFC Said Next Middleweight Title Shot Is His

Yoel Romero defeated former UFC Middleweight Champion Luke Rockhold by third round knockout in the main event of UFC 221.

The Cuban could’ve become the UFC Interim Middleweight Champion if he made weight for the bout, but that hasn’t stopped the fighter from apparently getting the next shot at the UFC Middleweight Title.

“I don’t have an idea (of when the title shot is happening),” Romero said on The MMA Hour. “Maybe July? I don’t know when. I hear he’s sick, he’s feeling no good, he’s feeling very bad. I pray for him. I’m waiting. I’m waiting for him.”

Robert Whittaker was supposed to defend the middleweight title against Rockhold at UFC 221, but injuries knocked him out of the bout and Romero took his place.

Romero also claims that the people of Cuba and the people of Miami are going to go crazy if he captures the UFC Middleweight Title.

“Cuba will [go] crazy, Miami will [go] crazy,” Romero said. “Many people in the world will be so happy, it’ll [be] crazy, believe me. I’m very excited, I’m very happy.”

Whittaker did defeat Romero in their first meeting at UFC 213, with that victory coming by way of decision.
