The much anticipated pay-per-view buyrate number for the Floyd Mayweather vs. Conor McGregor fight has become much more clear, according to a report.
Boxingscene.com reported that Mayweather vs. McGregor, referred to as "The Money Fight," did 4.4 million domestic buys on pay-per-view, just barely missing out on the record 4.6 million buys the 2015 fight between Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao drew.
If the number turns out to be true, it would be another record the Mayweather-McGregor fight would fall short of. The fight also had a live gate of $55.4 million, nearly $17 million short of the live gate for Mayweather vs. Pacquiao. Mayweather had a guarantee purse of $100 million for the fight while McGregor had a $30 million purse, but both men are expected to make a lot more with their pay-per-view cuts.
Now that a month since the fight concluded has passed, financial details are starting to sound more like hyperbole. After the fight, UFC president Dana White initially said the fight did 6.5 million pay-per-view buys although he did not specify if that number were simply domestic buys and global buys. Showtime recently stated that the pay-per-view had between four and five million buys.
The report also stated an announcement on the Mayweather-McGregor pay-per-view buyrate was delayed because organizers of the event were waiting for the last few cable companies to provide buyrate numbers.
Mayweather stopped McGregor in the 10th round of their fight from August 26. An official announcement is expected to come as early as this week, according to the report.
