Joey Janela: Sandman Originally Just Wanted To Do A Spot With Invisible Man In The Clusterfuck

Joey Janela is proud of Sandman’s last match.

Back at Spring Break X, the ‘Hardcore Icon’ brought an end to his career by wrestling The Invisible Man. The match was widely liked by fans, with some even saying it was the best match of Invisible Man’s existence.

Speaking with Fightful Overbooked’s In The Weeds podcast, Janela said that Sandman originally just asked to do a spot with the Invisible Man during the Clusterfuck. The ‘Bad Boy’ had a different idea.

“Originally it was like, Hack wants to do the Clusterfuck and wants to do a spot with the Invisible Man. I said, fuck that, I can make a whole match out of it. I can write out a whole match that limits you with all smoke and mirrors and we can make it this big fucking [thing]. The most what the fuck match on paper is The Sandman versus the Invisible Man. The twists and turns going into Spring Break this year, you didn’t know. When we announced, The Sandman’s last match, everyone was like, Joey is going to wrestle The Sandman. Joey Janela is gonna end another one. Not in that way, another career, not life. For a good couple weeks, everyone’s like, it’s Janela versus Sandman. We put out the Invisible Man video and everyone was like, holy shit. I was so proud of the build to Spring Break this year and the matches. In my notes, I have it written, the whole Sandman & Invisible Man match and the whole Me and Brodie match. Maybe I’ll save those forever and put them in a book one day or some shit like that. Basically, the Sandman match went almost 90% according to plan. Sandman forgot and missed some spots that we had. I had a spot where Sandman would be sitting in the corner and Fonzie would put the chair on him and they would act like the Invisible Man was going to do the Van Terminator. Sandman would slap the chair to make the sound. We went over the match, we went to Philly to Catchpoint to go over the match with him. But yeah, what a cool ass fucking dude. The match is a tremendous piece of business, but that video package, I think is the best wrestling related video package of the year.”
