King Trevor Murdoch On People Reaching Out To Him After His Retirement Announcement: ‘Where Were They At When I Was On The Bottom Working My Way Back Up’

King Trevor Murdoch on people’s reaction to his retirement.

The 5/2 NWA Powerrr saw Trevor Murdoch announce his retirement following a loss to Pretty Boy Smooth. It later turned out to be a ruse as Murdoch revealed his new King persona on the 6/27 NWA Powerrr.

Speaking with Sean Ross Sapp of Fightful, King Trevor Murdoch talked about people texting him after he announced his retirement in May.

“You do what you gotta do. It’s almost like I had to die. I know that’s a tough word to use, but have you ever noticed when someone passes away, everybody seems to come out of the woodwork? ‘Oh, he was so great.’ ‘Oh, he was such a good person.’ I had thousands upon thousands of people message me after I retired, people that I hadn’t heard from in years. My question was, ‘Where were they at when I was grinding? Where were they at when I was on the bottom working my way back up?’ They weren’t anywhere. But as soon as they had an opportunity to tell everybody, ‘Oh, something good’s happening to him, I’ll tell everybody I love him.’

So I took that and I worked it to my advantage, and like sheep, people fell right into it. I even had a Will Sasso from Mad TV make a comment on my post. Chris Jericho—oh, God, love him. He should be excited the fact that this worked. I’m the wrestler, I’m in control. I’m the one that leads this show. Once everybody realizes that, they’ll start enjoying my work a whole lot more.”

Murdoch also said that he’s not retiring anytime soon.

“No time soon, Sean. I believe I’ve just restarted my career. I’ve got people that will be following me. The royal court will be getting bigger and larger. Before you know it, we will be a formidable force in NWA.”
