Rey Pegasus Says He Still Hasn’t Fully Processed Winning CMLL Mexican National Middleweight Title
Rey Pegasus comments on winning the Mexican National Middleweight Title.
Rey Pegasus became the challenger for the Mexican National Middleweight Title via online fan voting. He faced then-champion Guerrero Maya Jr. at CMLL Noche de Campeones, ultimately defeating him for the belt.
Speaking with Fightful’s Luis Pulido, Pegasus commented on winning the fan vote and later the title as well.
“Come to think of it, several weeks have already gone by, and I still can’t wrap my head around it. I’ll be completely honest: sometimes I still can’t believe how it all went down, especially at the beginning with the voting. It was also quite a surprise because it featured one of wrestling’s greatest legends, Señor Blue Panther, and a wrestler who’s really making a name for himself, with a strong track record and tremendous family support, Brillante Jr., and me, the new guy. To see that, in such a short time, the audience supported me so much in the voting already made me very happy. Competing for that championship was already a historic moment for me, and I also knew who I was going to face: Guerrero Maya Jr., a wrestler with so much experience, so many years in the ranks of CMLL, and, above all, so many title defenses under his belt. He was one of the wrestlers with the most title defenses and the longest career, especially with that historic championship—a title held by wrestling legends, more than you can imagine. It’s so important that even I, at times, didn’t fully grasp the magnitude of that championship. I went out there with all my heart that day—I went out with all the determination in the world to win that championship. I was very happy because, as I also mentioned in the interview, I’m not from Mexico City and I don’t have my family nearby, but that day I was fortunate enough that they made the trip to be present at Arena México and witness the championship match. Imagine how excited I was to have my family there. To have the chance to win that championship is something I still haven’t fully processed to this day. I haven’t fully processed that moment. I’m still savoring it, enjoying it, and it really was something very, very, very beautiful that I got to experience.”
