Backyard wrestling for young fans of professional wrestling is not rare, as trampolines make an excellent makeshift ring for fans looking to replicate their favorite wrestlers moves. For one singer, he now recalls almost breaking his back due to a botched attempt at a Jeff Hardy move.
While speaking on The 2 Johnnies Late Night Lock In, singer/songwriter Tom Grennan recalled wrestling with his brother as a teen, as well as an incident where he would botch a Swanton Bomb.
“Yeah, man. WWE was my childhood. Yeah, but there’s a story. We had a trampoline at home and I’d just beat my brother up, and I loved a wrestler called Jeff Hardy. Yeah. (gestures to audience) He knows. He’s got a haircut like him as well. He had a move called Swanton Bomb, and I tried this Swanton Bomb and I bounced out of the trampoline onto a tree stump that my dad had cut, and I got my back and I crawled into the house and I said, dad, dad, my back, my dad. My dad said, ‘cop on, get up.'”
Grennan shared that he was still in pain a few weeks later, with it turning out that he had broken his back on landing.
“I was probably like 15 maybe, a bit younger. My dad didn’t believe me for crying wolf kind of thing. A few weeks later, I’m still complaining about this back. I’m like, ‘Dad, you’re going to have to take me to hospital man’, and he said, ‘for fuck’s sake, let’s go.’ So he took me to hospital and the doctor was like, ‘why didn’t you come in six weeks before?’ I said, ‘he didn’t let me.’ Mate, I had a broken back. One vertebrae from being paralysed, and my dad doesn’t hate me for this, but he was like, obviously, he’s gobsmacked. The doctors pulled him out, had a full-on word of him. My dad came in like this, ‘I’m so sorry.'”
Jeff Hardy is also dealing with a nagging injury at this point in time. You can read more about that here.
