For many British people, one of the most iconic sportspeople of the past several decades is football player David Beckham, who has become one of the most recognizable athletes on the planet, even years after retiring.
While speaking to The Extreme Channel in an interview recorded prior to AEW All In, Will Ospreay spoke about how sports bring people together in the UK, as well as his desire to be David Beckham as a kid.
“I mean, right now in today’s society, like I don’t really pay attention to what happens outside of wrestling in our country, but sometimes it does swarm our Twitter timelines. Everyone seems to be like super flipping divided. Everyone is like at each other’s throats, and I feel like politics has like a huge impact on that. I hate politics, especially when it comes to wrestling. The one thing I always notice about our country is when sports are on, we come together more than anything, and I just love the fact that when I was a kid, I wanted to be David Beckham. I wanted to be David Beckham so bad. I had the same haircuts, the same thing, and the way that he talked about representing England, but like for me, it’s about like, I don’t like just saying England because I was a British wrestler. I was Brit wrestler. So the idea of like getting to represent the whole of the UK in one of the most important nights of my life, it’s the biggest night of my life, man.”
Elsewhere in the same interview, Ospreay spoke about what he wanted to do with his AEW World Title reign. You can read more about that here.
