AJ Styles Says He Did Not Expect To Have The Run That He Has Had Thus Far In WWE

AJ reflects on his WWE career.

"The Phenomenal One" AJ Styles has now been a WWE superstar for two-and-a-half years. He made his WWE debut at the 2016 Royal Rumble PPV and has been knocking down strikes since he's been in the sports-entertainment lane. In two years, AJ has won the WWE United States Championship twice and is also a two-time, current and the longest reigning WWE Champion in SmackDown history and the days attached to that reign continue to rise as the days roll on.

Since early August AJ has had a thorn in his side in the form of Samoa Joe and both former TNA World Heavyweight Champions will continue their bitter rivalry on September 16th when they face off at the 'Hell In A Cell' PPV. Styles took a brief break from feuding with "The Destroyer" to speak with 'Amarillo.com' to promote WWE's live event in Amarillo, Texas on Saturday and during the interview, AJ was asked did he initially expect the success that he's had thus far in WWE when he first signed with the company and the WWE Champion responded with the following:

“Surely I’m not the only one surprised by this. If you’d told me years ago that I’d be WWE Champion two times, a United States Champion and you’re going to have the belt at least half your career, I would have said that’s ridiculous. But, hard work has paid off. In the long run, if I was to lose this title tomorrow, I’ve had a great run and I’m very happy.” Styles said.

AJ has put on a number of fan-favorite matches throughout his two years in WWE but he can not narrow one down to being his favorite. He listed his bout with John Cena at the 2017 Royal Rumble PPV as one of his favorites along with his series against Roman Reigns.

"That’s tough." AJ answered when asked about the best match he's had thus far in WWE. "I have so many memorable moments so far. There is the Royal Rumble, and John Cena. There is also Roman Reigns. Then when I won the championship from Dean Ambrose. There are so many matches that are hard to pick.”

As mentioned, AJ Styles will be defending the WWE Championship against Samoa Joe at the 'Hell In A Cell' PPV and to take a look at the updated match card for that event, head over to Fightful's "events" section.
