Aleister Black On The Undertaker: "He Opened The Door For Darker Characters"

Aleister Black understands the comparisons between he and the Undertaker, but he isn't trying to be "The next Undertaker."

Appearing on Chasing Glory with Lilian Garcia, Black was asked if he drew any inspiration from The Undertaker given their "dark" characters. Black revealed while the Undertaker inspired him, he is a different character than the Lord of Darkness.

"I understand that people think that, because there is a certain element of me that has [the dark side] but there is only one Undertaker, and I could never, never fill that void," said Black. "I?m the first Aleister Black, and there is never going to be a second one. The legacy that Undertaker has made -- I don?t even know how to put it into words. He changed the landscape. Is Undertaker indirectly responsible for Aleister Black? Sure, because he opened the door to darker characters. He was the first one to really take it to that level, and allowed an audience to see something that wasn?t so clean and cut." Black continued, "Interestingly enough I gravitated towards him when I was older. I didn?t grow up watching WWE. I was 16 I think when I saw my first ever WWE pay-per-view. I wasn?t aware of the Undertaker [before that moment]. I grew up watching New Japan and WCW because that?s what we had in Amsterdam. I gravitated towards him because I love the aura that he presented. I loved that it was a character that I could relate to, but I would not say that I?m the modern day version of the Undertaker. I'm not."

During the same interview, Black opened up about his struggles with mental health. You can read those quotes here.

Black is currently scheduled to face Tommaso Ciampa at NXT TakeOver: Phoenix for the NXT Title.
