Big E Says He Was Originally Set To Drop WWE Title To Seth Rollins At Day 1, Win It Back From Him At WrestleMania 38
Big E details the original plans for his road to WrestleMania 38.
Day 1 ended on a sour note for many fans, as Brock Lesnar pinned Big E and ended his reign with the WWE Championship. Lesnar was originally scheduled to face Roman Reigns at the event, but Reigns had to pull out of the event after testing positive for COVID-19.
Speaking with Sam Roberts for a new interview, Big E agreed that he probably should not have been pinned in the five-way match, which also included Kevin Owens, Seth Rollins, and Bobby Lashley.
“I too was of the same mindset but ultimately, I have never pitched to not lose. If anything, we have at times because of the story, we have pitched to lose. But look, this is Brock Lesnar, am I going to go in there and say, ‘Actually, no, I think I need to retain.’ No, of course not. So more than anything it’s like, okay, this is what we were handed, this is the direction, we’ll make the best of it.”
E went on to reveal the original plans for his title reign.
“Actually, what we were moving towards initially was — it was supposed to be and Seth in a singles at Day 1. I was going to drop the title anyway, it’s supposed to drop the title to Seth. We come back at Mania, we do it again, I regain the title. That’s what was originally [planned]. You know, things change all the time, so who knows what was meant. I think by the time we got to December, it already started morphing. Seth was named as the number one contender, I can’t remember exactly when that was, but we had a lot of lead time before Day 1. Creative, the office was like, okay, well we need a filler program. So then, KO got added. It became a three way thing for a little bit. Then, Bobby needed something to do. Vince loves Bobby, so Bobby’s inserted. It was supposed to be a four-way at Day 1. Roman’s sick, Brock’s in. The match that was supposed to be a singles where I dropped the title at Day 2. I regain it at WrestleMania. By the time we get to WrestleMania, my neck is broken, my career is over. That whole butterfly effect, it’s kind of insane. I don’t mention any of this because woe is me, I should’ve gotten a WrestleMania spot. But, it’s so funny how life works.”
Elsewhere in the interview, Big E recalled a shooting a Booty-O’s ad with Brodie Lee Jr. Check out his full story by clicking here.
