Bishop Dyer: The Main Event Of WrestleMania Does Not Need Celebrity Or Outside Involvement

Bishop Dyer gives his take on the latest development in the feud between Cody Rhodes and Randy Orton.

Fans are still chatting about a controversial segment on the April 3 episode of SmackDown, as Pat McAfee made his return to the company and aligned himself with Randy Orton. The angle has largely been panned online, with some pointing out the similarities to the involvement of Travis Scott in last year’s path to WrestleMania.

Speaking with Denise Salcedo for a new interview, Bishop Dyer, a close friend of McAfee, gave his take on the situation.

“To me, I’m torn. Pat’s my boy, even though I like to kick him in the nuts every once in a while. Pat’s a weird anomaly because he’s not a celebrity to the full extent, he’s not a wrestler, he’s kind of just that guy that is in between and has his finger in everything whether it be comedy, entertainment, sports, wrestling, all that. It’s not like Travis Scott all over again that ruined the main event. But, I also think that the main event of WrestleMania does not need a celebrity or outside involvement. I think the story should be between the two guys. I’m bummed out a little bit with the story that is being told between Cody and Randy because I think with the history that they have and Randy being the mentor and Randy having him throw Cody out and throwing his brother out of the Royal Rumble, that’s the story we need to be telling. Why do we have this anonymous phone call and it turns out to be McAfee? It’s going to be good but I just feel like when you’re having that big of a prize fight that’s probably going to main event the first night of WrestleMania, why do we have to have someone else? It’s be like having a special guest referee. To me, the purest form of wrestling should be the main event of WrestleMania, that should be a one-on-one competition down the line except for a heel trying to take some shortcuts or whatever. That’s the thing to me that shouldn’t be touched.”

Continuing on, Dyer said that McAfee should’ve been involved in a match with lower stakes.

“It’s like if you’re the NFL, the Super Bowl should be the two best teams are playing for the championship. The pro bowl is where you have fun and you throw different mixes in and you have challenges and that’s where you have guests and other people. I just think that the main event of WrestleMania is sacred and when you add a celebrity — I mean the Travis Scott thing, oh my god. It won’t be that again with Pat because he’s a wrestler. But it’s like, how far do they take this? Is there going to be involvement in the wrestling match? I get that we want Cody to overcome things, we’re going to get a different edge of Cody. I think Randy is one of the greatest of all time, he’s one of my favorite people of all time. I’m Monday morning quarterbacking it here, this is just my opinion right or wrong. If you’re going to get Pat involved, get him involved in something else, you know? Not the main event of WrestleMania.”
