Cody Rhodes Talks WWE’s Decision To Go Through With Traveling To Saudi Arabia For Night Of Champions, ‘Gotcha Culture’ About Who Is Democrat Or Republican
Rhodes delved into the subject.
It was at WWE Night of Champions in Saudi Arabia that Cody Rhodes bested Randy Orton to win the King of the Ring tournament and secure a rematch against John Cena for the Undisputed WWE Title at SummerSlam.
Before WWE talent and staff made their way to the Middle East, U.S. President Donald Trump directed the U.S. military to strike three Iranian nuclear facilities. Iran responded by launching a missile attack on the largest U.S. military base in the Middle East.
It was soon declared by Iranian state media that every U.S. citizen and military personnel in the Middle East could be a target. While speaking to the Boston Herald, Rhodes addressed WWE’s decision to go through with the trip and then talked about what he feels is ‘gotcha culture’ when it comes to being a Democrat, Republican, or one being moderate with their political affiliations.
“That is a responsibility to our fan base. I don’t want to be negative, but I will say there is this whole ‘gotcha culture’ over who is a Democrat, who is a Republican, who is a moderate, and who people support. None of these things really should be anybody’s business – because our business is going where our show goes, which is all over the world, and hopefully bringing people together.
WWE is a non-partisan brand. We go where the show goes. One of the biggest eye-opening moments when you go to Saudi Arabia with WWE is when you look out at the fans at the show, at the meet and greets, or outside the hotel – and there is such a similarity between those who are hungry for WWE back home and those who are hungry for it in Europe and those who are so hungry for it all over the world. I feel so honored, especially in tumultuous times, to be able to go.”
It has not been decided which night of SummerSlam that Rhodes versus Cena will take place on, but here’s the updated match card for the Premium Live Event:
- Undisputed WWE Championship: John Cena (c) vs. Cody Rhodes
- Jelly Roll & Randy Orton vs. Logan Paul & Drew McIntyre
