Don Callis Praises Scott D’Amore, ‘I Think He’s A Great Partner To Have’
Don Callis has high praise for Scott D’Amore.
Callis and D’Amore have maintained a personal and professional relationship for decades at this point. Currently, the duo work together in D’Amore’s Maple Leaf Pro company, where Callis is a part of the commentary team.
Speaking with Fightful’s Sean Ross Sapp for a new interview, Callis said that Scott D’Amore has always been a great partner.
“I’ve known Scott since I was booking the Winnipeg promotion in the late 90’s and he sent me a picture. I still have it actually. It’s a 20 year old Scott D’Amore. It looks like a giant hairy baby. Scott was a really good wrestler. I wrestled him in Windsor. Very talented and probably, like me, came up in not the ideal time for the look that he had or the look that I had. But he’s always been a great independent promoter. I always thought Scott and I balanced each other well. I was always a big idea, boom, change the world, Omega / Jericho, boom, let’s put the World title on a lady. I always had the big ideas and then Scott was like the guy who’d bring it back and go, ‘Okay, this is how we execute.’ So he’s very strategic, very smart. He’s a guy who’s very committed to Canada and to Canadian wrestling. I think he’s a great partner to have. I enjoyed working with him in Impact. About him firing me—and they actually did try to fire me, but you can’t fire someone who’s already quit. So that’s what I would say about that.”
Callis then recalled his management storyline with D’Amore in TNA Wrestling.
“But I’m glad people viewed that and had fun, and Scott and I certainly enjoyed the last couple of months I was in Impact, doing the dueling whatever EVP thing. The funny thing about that was that when we took over Impact, we both said we’re never putting ourselves on television. They insisted that I was doing commentary because it was hot with New Japan at the time what I was doing. But I never wanted to be a character on the TV, neither did he. Of course, as always happens in wrestling, something happens and someone goes—and it’s always someone else, Sean—that they go, ‘You know what we need? Oh, my God, just do it this one time,’ then it’s every week.”
Elsewhere in the interview, Don Callis had a ton of great things to say about Kenny Omega. Check out his full comments by clicking here.
