Abyss speaks about his experience being scanned for WWE 2K25, comments on what being added to the game means to him, and reflects on the TNA iMPACT! video game release from 2008.
Abyss is now available as a playable character in WWE 2K25 since he’s part of the Dunk & Destruction DLC pack that was released on June 25. Though the TNA Hall of Famer has worked for WWE as a producer for many years, this is the first time the Abyss character is included in any WWE video game release.
During a recent interview with Fightful's Sean Ross Sapp, Abyss revealed that he was approached about being included in the game in summer 2024. He was surprised that TNA and WWE supported the idea and called the character's inclusion in a WWE video game a bucket list moment for himself.
"The opportunity was presented to me sometime last summer. When they first approached me about it, I couldn’t believe it. I was shocked. I never thought it was going to be a possibility. TNA was on board with it. WWE, obviously, was on board with it and presented the opportunity. I jumped at it. It was a bucket list moment to be in a WWE video game, especially 2K25. Great feeling to be wanted like that."
When asked if he had to do anything physically to add the character to the roster, he said all he needed was to have his likeness scanned into the system. Abyss called both the technology used by 2K and the final result mind-blowing.
"The technology is mind-blowing. I didn’t have to do anything. I just did the scans. They sat me in a room with 100 cameras around my head to do the scans and other stuff. That’s the part that blows me away. 2K25, the attention to detail is mind-blowing to me. I feel like I’m watching a video of myself and not a video game. The way I walk in the video game, the way I move, the music, Janice, my hair, the mask. Everything is exactly how it was when I wrestled. It’s pretty mind-blowing."
Abyss also reflected on having his TNA theme music in the game, noting that it was a massive part of the character for nearly two decades, and he says the response on social media has been overwhelming.
"I had that same theme music for 19 years. I used it my entire career. Never wavered from it or switched from it. It is such a big part of the character and presentation. I can’t tell you how many comments I’ve seen on my socials and in-person from fans, people thrilled that they were able to use the original music because it was such a big part of the presentation."
While this is the first inclusion of his character in a video game in well over a decade, Abyss actually made his video game debut as part of TNA Wrestling. TNA only launched one console video game, 2008's TNA iMPACT! Abyss says his experience being added to that game was similar to that of WWE 2K25, only on a much smaller scale.
"It was similar, just on a smaller scale. Doing the headscans and full body photography in the full gimmick. Stuff like that. That was 2008. The video game, I don’t believe, got a ton of traction. I don’t believe it was out for extremely long. That was my only exposure to any video game."
AJ Styles is an avid gamer who made his debut in TNA iMPACT! as well. He has gone on record as saying he was pissed that he was not featured on the cover after being involved in the early process of developing the game. Read more here.
