Exclusive: Sonjay Dutt Talks Impact Wrestling Roster Overhaul, MMA Storylines On Impact

Sonjay Dutt has experienced the many changes to Impact Wrestling over the years, but is hopeful this current incarnation of Impact will be the most successful one with the unique storylines being showcased on television.

Dutt spoke to Fightful before the recent Bound for Glory show about the current state of affairs in Impact Wrestling and the massive roster turnover since the promotion’s ownership went to Anthem. Among the many names that came to Impact since the regime change, Dutt said Dezmond Xavier is his favorite.

“Top of the list for me would be Dezmond Xavier. I think there is so much talent in him and he’s still so young and he’s so hungry and this is his first shot at a television product. He is now learning a different aspect of the game and trying to learn how to balance the independent and work in a television style and I think he’s meshed perfectly. LAX are amazing and Johnny Impact, his track record speaks for itself. He’s a star, a stud,” Dutt said.

One of the biggest storylines in recent months is the inclusion of Bobby Lashley's real life MMA team, American Top Team, and former UFC fighter Stephan Bonnar into an angle, which culminated at Bound for Glory. Dutt said he's not much of an MMA fan, but thinks the angle has been compelling and cool to watch.

"I'm not an MMA aficionado so it was all a learning curve for me, figuring out these guys and their accolades. Stephan and I had never met before, but he's an interesting cat. The stuff that aired [on Impact] where Stephan and Moose go to the ATT facility and destroy their trophy case, I thought was cool and whatnot. It's different," Dutt said.

The interview with Dutt can be seen in "The List & Ya Boy" video above. “The List & Ya Boy” is hosted by Fightful owner Jimmy Van and Fightful managing editor Sean Ross Sapp and can be seen live on YouTube and on Fightful every Wednesday at 3 p.m. ET.
