The GLOW Comic Creators Discuss The Uniqueness Of Writing A Wrestling Book

Despite not being one of Netflix's biggest original draws, GLOW has earned rave reviews from fans and critics alike. Season 3, which has yet to have a release date announced, is looking to mix things up and keep its positive momentum going.

Fans of the show don't have to wait for the new episodes to drop, however, to get their Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling fix. IDW Publishing, the same imprint behind WWE's comic books, are in the midst of a 4-part mini-series that uses the Netflix dramedy as a launchpad for an original story.

WWE Live Event Results From Cardiff (4/18): Cody Rhodes, Damian Priest, Becky Lynch In Action

Issue #1, which debuted in March (writer Tini Howard, artist Hannah Templer, colorist Rebecca Nalty, and letterer Christa Miesner) will see its follow-up hit stands on June 12th.

In an interview with Vulture, Howard and Templer mention how their previous work for IDW on WWE and Gem and the Holograms, respectively, is what got them hired onto this project. They also mention that while it was never a mandate to have an all-women creative team, it ended up feeling like the most natural fit.

While talking about the current boom in women's wrestling, Howard had this to say about what draws her to the medium:

"I like wrestling for the same reason I like drag queens and superheroes. I think identity is fun, and how we look at ourselves and turn that into a shareable identity is compelling stuff.

"One of the cool things about writing wrestling is how visually distinct it is. People have specific finishing moves that they use to signify that they’re at their max power, and it’s really fun to write the wrestling with intent. Because it’s a comic, I can take my time and every move can mean something. In a real wrestling match, there’s an amount of improv that goes on between two very skilled athletic performers, but in a comic, I can have her choose this move for this reason because that’s how she’s feeling."

Here is the official synopsis of the comic book:

"The Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling are ready to take on the world—or at least LA—in this comic based on the hit Netflix series! When the unthinkable happens and the women of GLOW find themselves ahead of schedule, Sam ruins the promise of a wrestling-free weekend with… more wrestling! Robbed of blissful relaxation and forced to raise money to fund their way to the event, the GLOW team is less-than-prepared for their opponents: real gorgeous lady wrestlers. What could possibly go wrong?!"

The GLOW comic is available both online and at your local comic book store.
