Jerry 'The King' Lawler's lawsuit against Hardeman County, Tennessee is still active.
In July 2018, Brian Christopher Lawler, better known to some as Grandmaster Sexay, attempted to take his own life while in jail. He was rushed to a local medical facility but the situation was described as "dire" and sadly he passed away shortly thereafter.
The next year, Lawler filed a suit against the town as a result of his son's death, which happened while he was in their custody because of a DUI arrest.
Per PWInsider, Lawler’s lawsuit against Hardeman County remains active and is still headed for a jury trial. After a year-long postponement due to the emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic, the trial is now scheduled to begin on May 23, 2022.
Lawler's legal team has begun gathering depositions of defendants and witnesses. One of those people is Sheriff John Doolen. Lawler claims that Doolen promised him that Brian would get helped for his addiction issues while incarcerated. According to Lawler, however, that didn't happen, leaving him with a feeling of betrayal.
Lawler is seeking $3 million in damages, as well as additional compensation should the court deem it worthy. Additionally, a court order for Hardeman County to implement immediate changes to prevent similar incidents from occurring is being pursued. The lawsuit states that “the order should require “Hardeman County to correct their unconstitutional deficiencies so that no other family has to go through what this family has had to endure over the past year.”
