Jim Cornette Clarifies Position In MLW, Says He's Announcing And Working As Promo Coach

Jim Cornette details his role with MLW.

This past Saturday at MLW Intimidation Games, Jim Cornette surprised everyone by showing up to take over the role as color commentator. Cornette had not been announced for the show, but with Tony Schiavone not being able to work Saturday events, Cornette was called to replace him for shows.

"This was not something that was in the works for a long time. Court Bauer had called me and mentioned Tony Schiavone -- Tony has 72 jobs. Now that they switched to Saturday, Tony can't make it," said Cornette on the latest episode of the Jim Cornette Experience. "They were wondering if I'd come in and do New York (in April) for two shows. There was a very generous financial offer attached to this. We agreed to that. Once they got by the show this past weekend, they were gonna announce that. Court called me back and he mentioned to the network that I was going to be on board in New York. They had asked him if I couldn't come to Chicago. There was another generous financial offer involved," he joked.

Following Cornette's debut, it was reported that Cornette would be working behind the scenes with the promotion as well. Cornette discussed his backstage role in the company, clarifying that he is not full-time and detailing exactly what his new job entails.

"I'm not full-time anything. I'm not opposed to further dates with MLW after New York, but I'm not dropping everything I'm doing and taking a full-time job. I'm allergic to the word full-time. There's no contract. I don't want to sign a contract with anybody. If I make a deal to be there for a date, then I will fulfill that commitment," said Cornette. "As far as agenting, I was coaching promos, (that) is primarily what I was asked to do. We did the TV shoot on Saturday and guys got together for promos at the hotel on Sunday and I was involved in that. And specifically, maybe working with guys who had not done television before or barely done it or who wanted to present themselves in a new way. Promo coach. There is no official agent role. I'm not involved in creative. Konnan told me, 'If you see something and you think you can help these guys, tell em.' Primarily, I'll be helping greener and newer guys with their promos."

Cornette is scheduled to be in New York with the promotion for their double-shot of shows over WrestleMania Weekend. It is unknown if he will continue with the promotion past April.
