Kurt Angle disagrees with the idea he didn’t need to be trained in pro wrestling.

In 1998, Kurt Angle was signed by WWE following his success as an Olympic gold medalist in wrestling before being trained by Dory Funk Jr. ahead of his in ring debut in March of 1999 before becoming a full time member of the WWE roster later that year. Over the years, it has been noted that Angle didn’t need to be trained by several names in the industry.

While speaking to Going Ringside in a new interview, Kurt Angle disagreed with that idea, but did note he picked up on it relatively quickly.

“I needed training. They’re just being nice. But I picked up on it relatively quickly. I only trained for about seven months before I went on TV, which is literally almost impossible and to be honest with you, I didn’t know what the heck I was doing. My opponents had to leave me in the ring and call the whole entire match when we were out there wrestling. So I learned from- I had to catch on. I was learning while I was still performing, and I was getting better and better every week and literally I became one of the best in the business probably two years into it.”

Elsewhere in another recent interview, Kurt spoke about his thoughts on Triple H’s creative influence. You can read more about that here.
