An Osaka man has been charged and fined for cyberbullying Hana Kimura.
Nippon reports the Tokyo Prosecutors’ Office made a “summary indictment against a man in his 20s," charging him with making public insults and fining him 9,000 yen ($80 USD) for sending several messages to Hana Kimura prior to her death.
The messages included comments such as “Is there any value to your life?” and “When are you going to die?” The posts were deleted following her death on May 23, but images were taken and sent to the police. Nearly 1200 posts from 600 accounts were investigated according to a previous report.
The accused has since apologized to Kimura's family via email.
Kimura received the threats and bullying messages following an episode of the reality show "Terrace House" where she was portrayed as aggressive during a confrontation with a housemate who ruined her wrestling outfit.
Hana's mother Kyoko has launched an anti-cyberbullying nonprofit organization. She is appealing to the government to help victims of slander and libel and wants social media etiquette taught at every level of schooling.
