Mark Henry Recalls Mae Young Giving Birth To A Hand: ‘It Was The Best Thing That I Ever Did In Wrestling’

Mark Henry recalls the infamous Mae Young pregnancy storyline.
In early 2000, Mae Young and Mark Henry had a fling, which resulted in the former getting pregnant. Things escalated quickly afterward, and Young went into labor. She ended up birthing a hand.
Speaking with Inside the Ropes last August, Mark Henry discussed the storyline where Mae Young ended up giving birth to a hand. Henry recalled the earlier chat with the creative when they pitched this idea.
“Get out of here. In one day? They were like, ‘No, Mark. Over a few weeks.’ I said, ‘That’s not how it works. It takes nine months.’ They’re like, ‘We’re not going to do it in nine months, Mark.’”
Henry couldn’t understand the reasoning why they wanted to get Young pregnant, so he asked Vince McMahon, but didn’t get an answer.
“I asked Vince at least two or three times, he would never answer me. I would be like, ‘Man, what why? Why getting pregnant?’ Because she can’t have a baby, and this and that. He was like, ‘Don’t worry, Mark. It’s going to come to a a great conclusion.’”
Pat Patterson eventually told him what was actually going to happen. Henry called this storyline the “best thing” he did in his wrestling career.
“So the day of Pat Patterson comes to me and goes, ‘Did you hear what’s going on?’ I was like, ‘No, what’s going on, Pat?’ He’s like, ‘You got to sit down. I don’t want you to hurt yourself.’ Then he told me, and I said, ‘A hand?’ He said, ‘Yeah. Look, Gerald Brisco don’t know, so don’t tell him.’ Gerald Brisco has a very weak stomach. If you go Gerald Brisco [mimics him throwing up], he’ll just throw up. It’s the best thing ever. So Pat said, ‘I need you to go get a bunch of the food and catering that nobody’s eating and just mix it all together and put it in a plastic.’ Then they went and got this slime. They put that in the bag and then they put the hand down inside of it and then so it was underneath the sheet.
When they pulled the hand out, it made a sound like [does a pop sound] and you look at me and I’m laughing and I’m completely useless in the whole deal. I’m just laughing. So you go back and look at it and when they pull that hand out, Gerald Brisco go [mimics him throwing up]. It was the best thing that I ever did in wrestling. I won championships. I had serious emotional respectful moments with guys. There ain’t nothing that I enjoy more than that hand. I asked Vince, ‘Why a hand out of all the stuff?’ He said, ‘Mark, I’m giving you’ [mimics Vince McMahon clapping]. See how goofy that is? That’s what’s going on in Vince McMahon’s brain. He’s crazy.”
