NXT opened with Karrion Kross vacating the NXT Championship after suffering a shoulder injury during his title match against Keith Lee at TakeOver XXX. This led to NXT GM William Regal announcing later in the show that the September 1 episode of NXT will see Johnny Gargano, Tommaso Ciampa, Finn Balor and Adam Cole in a four-way Iron Man match to crown a new champion. Also on the show, Breezango defeated Imperium to become the new NXT Tag Team Champions.
