The landscape has shifted for the NXT women's division.
During Wednesday's NXT, General Manager William Regal announced NXT Women's Tag Team Titles are now part of the brand and Dakota Kai & Raquel Gonzalez are the first champions. Regal had them the belts as they won the Women's Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic.
The new champions were immediately confronted by Ember Moon & Shotzi Blackheart, setting up the first-ever NXT Women's Tag Team Championship match for later in the night.
The reign of Kai & Gonzalez last roughly an hour as they were defeated by Moon & Blackheart, who became the second-ever NXT Women's Tag Team Champions.
Regal teased the announcement last Wednesday following the WWE Women's Tag Team Championship bout between champions Shayna Baszler & Nia Jax against challengers Dakota Kai & Raquel Gonzalez. In the bout, WWE official Adam Pearce sent a Raw referee to the ring after the NXT referee had been knocked down. The Raw referee stopped the match with Kai in the Kirifuda clutch, despite Gonzalez being the legal woman.
Later in the night, after discussions with Pearce, Regal stated he would make a major announcement on the March 10 episode of NXT. Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer first reported news of NXT planning to introduce Women's Tag Team Titles.
