Vince McMahon knew that Miss Elizabeth was capable of much greater heights than being a wrestling announcer.
Miss Elizabeth is one of the most famous names in the history of women's wrestling. Although she was never a competitor inside the squared circle, her pairing with Randy Savage, her real-life husband, established a new standard for all valets in wrestling. However, Elizabeth was never supposed to come in as a manager when entering the World Wrestling Federation in 1985.
According to WWE Executive Director Bruce Prichard on Randy Savage’s A&E Biography special, part of Randy Savage’s agreement when coming into the World Wrestling Federation was that there would be job offerings for his brother, Lanny “The Genius” Poffo, and his wife, Elizabeth.
“Part of Randy's deal was he was going to bring his brother, Lanny Poffo, who later became ‘The Genius,’ but Randy also wanted his wife, Elizabeth, to have a role in the company. As legend has it, Randy originally wanted Liz to do some broadcasting work for WWE. Then, Vince [McMahon] took a look at her and said…”
At this point, Vince took over and emphatically stated that he thought the idea of Liz being a commentator was a short-sighted view of what she can bring to the company.
“No, you're not going to be a commentator. That’s a waste. So she became the manager,” Vince recalled.
Miss Elizabeth had been a broadcaster in the Poffo’s territory previously and WWE would later have female commentators Mike McGuirk and much later, Renee Young, but Miss Elizabeth will always remain the gold standard of the female valet in the eyes of many pro wrestling fans.
