Randy Savage Wanted To Have The Greatest Match In Wrestling History With Shawn Michaels

Fans may have been robbed of what could have been the greatest professional wrestling match of all-time.

On the debut episode of the Genius Cast, Lanny Poffo went back to the early '90s and told of how how brother, Randy Savage, wanted to have a retirement match against Shawn Michaels at WrestleMania.

"He's getting bored and he's noticing that Shawn Michaels is emerging -- not just as a tag team wrestler, but the greatest talent in the business at the time. He calls me up at 2 in the morning and he says, 'Can you find some breakaway champagne bottles?' His plan was to drink to Shawn Michaels' career. Pour him a glass, they would drink, they would toast, and then Randy would smash the bottle over Michaels' head, starting a two-year feud -- like the Hatfield's and McCoy's -- ending in WrestleMania where Michaels loses his hair if he loses and Randy retires to the announcing table if he loses. And they would have the greatest match ever in the history of wrestling and Randy retires. What happens? Pat (Patterson) says, 'Randy we're having a youth movement and the best thing you can do is stay on the microphone.' And that's when he went to WCW.

"Randy had planned to pass the torch to Michaels and lose right in the middle of the ring. As he did at WrestleMania 3 because he was not selfish. He wanted to do what was best for business. And they wouldn't let him."

Poffo noted that Savage spent his career looking to top the WrestleMania 3 bout with Ricky Steamboat, but couldn't because he didn't have a dance partner on Steamboat's level. Until Michaels came along.

Instead of facing Michaels at WrestleMania, Savage left WWF in 1994 and debuted for WCW shortly after.
