REPORT: Roman Reigns-John Cena Promo Was Scripted A Week In Advance

One of the biggest talking points from this past Monday Night Raw was the nature of the seemingly shoot-style promo between Roman Reigns and John Cena, but according to one report, the promo was all scripted.

According to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, the promo's fourth-wall breaking nature was entirely scripted, including the use of insider knowledge such as "heel turn" and "buried." Other topics, such as Cena supposedly burying younger talent was written before the show with the intention of being said on air. The script for that segment was done last week and Vince McMahon personally spoke with both Superstars about what he wanted to happen. Reigns and Cena were given outlines of the script.

It's worth noting that Fightful.com was told that while a general direction was given for the promo, it wasn't actually scripted to the degree in which was claimed. Cena and Reigns were both given freedom on the mic.

One thing that was not planned was Reigns apparently forgetting a line during his section of the promo and Cena using that to further talk trash to Roman about not being able to cut a good promo.

Reigns and Cena will wrestle each other at the Raw-exclusive pay-per-view No Mercy on September 24 in Los Angeles. The segment from Raw served as the contract signing for the fight. Fightful will have complete coverage of the show, including a post-show podcast live on Fightful.com and on YouTube. The segment in its entirety can be seen in the video above.
