Sgt. Slaughter Recalls Bringing The Undertaker To Vince McMahon's Attention

Sgt. Slaughter played a role in The Undertaker becoming a staple in WWE.

"The Phenom" The Undertaker appeared on the post-WrestleMania 35 edition of Monday Night RAW this week and delivered a Tombstone Piledriver to Elias. Prior to WrestleMania 35, it was confirmed by Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer that The Undertaker is set to appear at WWE's next Saudi Arabia show on June 7th. The Undertaker has spent nearly 30 years in WWE and prior to joining the company he was a part of WCW as "Mean Mark Callous".

WWE Hall Of Famer Sgt. Slaughter saw a tape of The Undertaker's work and decided to bring it to the attention of Vince McMahon which led to McMahon eventually bringing Callous on board and converting him into The Undertaker. Sgt. Slaughter shared that story during a recent sit-down interview with Sports Illustrated to promote WrestleMania 35.

“To not lose a WrestleMania for 21 years is pretty astounding. Then I brought him into the WWE always made me feel even better." Sgt. Slaughter shared. "Yeah, helped bring him in. He was wrestling down in WCW, kinda floundering around. [He] had real short hair red hair. Mark Callous, Mean Mark Callous. [I] saw a video of him, took it to Vince McMahon and he said, ‘Serge, if you think he’s good enough to be here, bring him in for a tryout’ so, brought him into Rochester, New York. He wrestled the first match and as I was watching the match, all of a sudden, my headset went off my ear and I heard Vince McMahon’s voice and he said, ‘Where’d you find this guy?’ And I said, ‘In a box of tapes’. He said, ‘Well, send him to my office when he’s done’ so, Mark came back from the ring and he said, ‘How did I do?’ I said, ‘Vince McMahon wants to talk to you’. He said, ‘Oh, did I do something wrong?’ I said, ‘I think you probably did something right’ so I introduced him to Vince and he’s been there ever since.” Slaughter said.
