Sidney Akeem (Reggie) Recalls His WWE 24/7 Title Win And Record 112-Day Reign

Sidney Akeem discusses his 24/7 Title reign in WWE.

In 2019, WWE introduced the 24/7 Championship. The rules were simple: as long as there was a referee, the title could change hands, anytime, anywhere. The title changed hands over 200 times during its 3 and a half year run, with Akeem (then known as Reggie) becoming its longest reigning champion at 112 days.

Speaking with Rewind Recap Relive, Akeem discussed how he found out he was winning the 24/7 Title.

“It’s so crazy because, legit, I am literally one day with Nia and Shayna and then the following week, which is the debut of me in front of the live crowd, it was Kansas City, Missouri, my home state, cause I’m from St. Louis.  Vince came to me a while ago and said, ‘Hey, right before we go back on the road, I want to get you into the 24/7 stuff. I need to figure out how to do it.’ When he told me that, it was like, all right this is what he wants to do, but he didn’t give me a timetable. Literally, the following week, I get a phone call saying, ‘Hey, you’re going to win the 24/7 Title tonight.’ So I go out in front of a live crowd, this is the first time in front of a wrestling crowd, and this is when I realized how unique the wrestling community is. They’ve been seeing me on TV all through the pandemic. I come out with Nia and Shayna with my suit. It’s like, ‘Reggie!’ They cheering for me. I’m like, ‘This feels good.’ Getting to the ring, Nia and Shayna turn on me. She bumped me, and then fans go, ‘You fucking suck. You suck Reggie, boo. You suck, good for you.’ Then the 24/7 mob comes out, and the wheels are turning, and I fricking hit Tozawa with a spinning crossbody. Boom, one, two, three. I win the title. [Fans are like], ‘Hey Reggie, come this way, come this way.’ I’m just like, ‘Oh my’… a whirlwind of emotions, but it was that quick, how I knew.”

Elsewhere in the interview, Akeem explained how his circus origins inspired him to write a comic book. Fans can read his comments here.
