Tetsuya Naito: Foreign Talent In G1 Climax Is Great, But It Says Something Is Lacking From Japan

Tetsuya Naito comments on the NJPW G1 Climax 32.

The annual NJPW G1 Climax is underway and features the largest field ever with four blocks featuring seven wrestlers in each block. JONAH, Tom Lawlor, El Phantasmo, and David Finlay are all making their G1 debuts, but there is no Japanese talent competing in their first-ever G1 Climax.

"It’s great to see entrants from all over the world. We have this worldwide feel, for sure, but this is New Japan Pro-Wrestling, so that says there’s something lacking from a Japanese standpoint," Naito told NJPW in an interview conducted before the tournament began.

When asked if he felt there was bigger picture issue, Naito replied, "Right. But I am looking forward to it. I’ve spoken a lot about whether we need to have a large number of entrants. But I’ve never been in a four block G1, and I might end up thinking that this is the best format for it. We’ll have to wait and see."

Naito dropped his opening G1 contest to Hirooki Goto on July 20. Fans can find results from the event by clicking here.
