Trick Williams: I Was At Church At The Pastor Said ‘Follow The Rock’ And I Knew I Was Supposed To Wrestle
Trick Williams has never shared the ring with The Rock, but when WWE was in Memphis ahead of WrestleMania 40, a “Whoop That Trick” chant broke out while The Rock was in the ring.
Speaking on The Pivot, Trick reflected on that segment and how he “followed The Rock.”
“To me, it’s one of those moments, but since that jump (to football), I’ve been jumping ever since. Jumped to South Carolina, found myself in a tryout with the Eagles, jumping to WWE. It wasn’t the popular thing to do at the time. I played football for 20 years. When they see me on social media, I’m ‘Sweet Daddy’ Trick and making skits and slamming people. Everybody didn’t understand who came from that football background. I just knew this was what I was supposed to do because it fit me. Seeing how that manifests to ‘Whoop That Trick’ and The Rock being the one in the ring when they are chanting, ‘Whoop That Trick.’
“I’m in church and deciding, ‘Do I want to wrestle?’ I went to a tryout, never wrestled before, they said, ‘Go learn what to do and we’ll bring you back for another tryout.’ I’m coaching kids, substitute teaching, and I feel like I’m kind of making a difference where I’m at. Teachers need to get paid more money. I went to church and the Pastor was talking about water coming from the rock. The Pastor said, ‘Follow the Rock.’ I went to Church thinking, ‘Do I need to wrestle or not?’ and the Pastor said, ‘Follow the Rock.’ I moved to Philadelphia two weeks later and said, ‘I’m supposed to wrestle.’ To see The Rock in the ring and people chant ‘Whoop That Trick,’ it’s bigger than me. I’m just doing what I’m supposed to do.”
While making the media rounds, Trick explained why he doesn’t want to be the next Rock. You can find his full comments here.
Trick Williams will challenge Sami Zayn for the WWE United States Title at WrestleMania 42.
