After a very forgettable and uneventful fight in Russia, Andrew Tabiti advanced to the World Boxing Super Series cruiserweight semifinals.
In a bout that even the announcers called “disappointing, awful to watch and horrible,” Tabiti defeated Ruslan Fayfer by unanimous decision (116-111, 115-112, 114-113) to advance to the WBSS cruiserweight semifinals. The fight was the co-main event bout to the Zolani Tete vs. Mikhail Aloyan matchup from the WBSS bantamweight quarterfinals.
The fight featured little action throughout the 12 rounds as both Fayfer and Tabiti would constantly clinch and hold each other with neither man ever getting into a rhythm to fight. Neither man threw anything big in the first six rounds as the two cruiserweight contenders landed just under 30 punches at that point.
Tabiti did eventually start to find adequate success landing numerous uppercuts and as Fayfer started to become desperate, constantly holding Tabiti. The holding got so bad that the referee deducted a point off of Fayfer late in the final round.
None of the boxers looked spectacular, but Tabiti's ability to land punches late in the fight proved to be the difference maker. Fayfer did not help himself as he barely did anything to win the last three rounds of the fight as he kept holding on to Tabiti.
Tabiti is the first semifinalist in the tournament. The other three quarterfinal matches in the cruiserweight portion of the second of the WBSS are Mairis Briedis vs. Noel Gevor, Yunier Dorticos vs. Mateusz Masternak and Krzysztof Głowacki vs. Maxim Vlasov.
