Chris Algieri vs. Tommy Coyle Added To Joshua vs. Ruiz Undercard

Chris Algieri's next fight has been announced as he continues his quest for another 140-pound world title.

Algieri will defend his WBO International junior welterweight title against Tommy Coyle on June 1 as part of the undercard of the Matchroom Boxing card taking place at Madison Square Garden. The fight, as well as several other bouts on the card, will be streamed in the United States on DAZN.

The 35-year-old Algieri once held the WBO junior welterweight title, winning a split decision against Ruslan Provodnikov in 2014. Five months after that title win, Algieri moved up in weight to challenge for the WBO welterweight title, but lost a 12-round decision to Manny Pacquiao.

After that loss, Algieri would go on to lose two of his next three fights before taking a break from the sport for nearly two years. Algieri returned in November 2018 with a win over Angel Hernandez and most recently fought in January when he won the WBO International title against Daniel Gonzalez.

Coyle is a 29-year-old fighter from the United Kingdom with a 25-4 pro record. Coyle has previously held titles such as the Commonwealth and IBF International lightweight titles. Ever since he lost a 12-round decision to Tyrone Nurse in 2016, Coyle has won his last three fights.

This is the latest confirmed fight that has been announced for the June 1 show at Madison Square Garden. The main event, which had to be reworked in the wake of Jarrell Miller’s failed drug test results, was recently announced as Anthony Joshua will defend his WBA “Super,” WBO and IBF heavyweight titles against Andy Ruiz Jr. Another fight that was recently confirmed was a fight between world champions Katie Taylor and Delfine Persoon to crown the first-ever undisputed WBA, WBC, WBO, IBF and Ring Magazine women’s lightweight champion.
