The main event of the upcoming UFC 218 card has taken a hit as former UFC Lightweight Champion Frankie Edgar has suffered a facial injury and is off the card.
Edgar was set to challenge UFC Featherweight Champion Max Holloway for the title, it would have been his third shot to capture the belt.
Combate was the first to report the news.
Holloway is expected to remain on the card at this time, as UFC officials are seeking an opponent to face the featherweight champion.
Here is an Instagram post by the champion about the situation:
Holloway (18-3-0) is going to be making the first defense of his championship, which he won by defeating Jose Aldo in a title unification bout at UFC 212. Holloway has also previously held the UFC Interim Featherweight Title, which he won by defeating Anthony Pettis at UFC 206. Holloway is also entering the fight on the strength of an 11 fight winning streak and he hasn’t been defeated in over four years.
UFC 218 takes place on Saturday, December 2 from the Little Caesars Arena in Detroit, Michigan with Max Holloway and an opponent TBA headlining. Fightful is providing live coverage of the event, with a post-show podcast to follow.
