While boxing fans around the world may be missing a superfight between Gennady Golovkin and Canelo Alvarez on May 5, Japanese boxing fans will get a chance to see two former superstars fight on that day in Tokyo.
Former three-division world champion Koki Kameda will face former WBC flyweight champion Pongsaklek Wonjongkam on May 5 at Korakuen Hall in Tokyo in a bout that will see both men come out of retirement. According to Asian Boxing, the fight is currently scheduled to be contested at 118 pounds in what could be the true final chapter in both men's boxing careers.
The fight is a rematch from their first encounter in 2010, which also took place in Tokyo. Kameda, the WBC flyweight champion at the time, lost the belt with a majority decision loss to Wonjongkam.
Wonjongkam retired in 2013 with a gargantuan 90-5-2 record (45 KO). Wonjongkam was awarded the WBC's "Fighter of the Decade" award for his two reigns as WBC flyweight champion. His first reign started in 2001 and ended in 2007 when he lost to Daisuke Naito. Wonjongkam would then win back the title against Kameda and that second reign ended in 2012 with a TKO loss to Sonny Boy Jaro.
Kameda has not fought since 2015 when he lost to Kohei Kono in a WBA super flyweight title fight. Kameda is a former WBA light flyweight, WBC flyweight and WBA bantamweight world champion. Kameda fought professionally from 2003 to 2015, amassing a 33-2 record (18 KO).
