Michael Conlan Set To Headline MSG Card On St. Patrick’s Day

Top Rank Boxing is returning to Madison Square Garden on St. Patrick's Day.

The company announced there will be a boxing card at the New York venue's Hulu Theater on March 17 to be streamed on ESPN+. The fight will feature Irish featherweight prospect Michael Conlan in the main event.

Conlan will face Ruben Garcia in a 10-round featherweight bout as the top fight, marking the first time Conlan headlines a boxing card at Madison Square Garden. Conlan, a former Olympic bronze medalist in 2012, has won all 10 of his pro bouts with his last fight coming in December. In Conlan's last bout, he won the vacant WBO Intercontinental featherweight title with a unanimous decision over Jason Cunningham in Manchester, England.

The co-feature is a featherweight fight between former WBO super bantamweight champion Jessie Magdaleno and former super featherweight title challenger Christopher Diaz. Magdaleno is coming off a title loss to Isaac Dogboe this past April in Philadelphia. The two fought on an ESPN-televised card with Dogboe stopping Magdaleno midway through the 11th round to capture the title.

Diaz also lost a title fight in 2018 when he was beaten by Masayuki Ito with the vacant WBO 130-pound title on the line back in July. The 24-year-old Diaz has since then recovered with a first-round knockout win over David Berna in Puerto Rico this past November.

The third fight that was announced for the event is a welterweight bout between former welterweight titleholder Luis Collazo and Samuel Vargas. Vargas will looked to end a two-fight winless streak as he is coming off a unanimous decision loss to Amir Khan back in September.
