Nonito Donaire To Fight On September 23 WBSS Card

Former world champion Nonito Donaire is set to make his return to the ring after nearly 11 months since his last fight.

Donaire will be fighting on the September 23 World Boxing Super Series card against Ruben Garcia Hernandez.

Conor McGregor vs Michael Chandler Officially Announced For UFC 303, Will Take Place At Welterweight

The WBSS card taking place on September 23 will be headlined by the first-round matchup in the cruiserweight tournament between Yunier Dorticos and Dmitry Kudryashov in San Antonio, Texas. Another WBSS fight on the card is a cruiserweight fight between Lateef Kayode and Keith Tapia. The winner of that fight would be a reserve fighter in case any of the cruiserweights still in the tournament are either injured or unable to fight.

The Filipino star has won world titles in four different weight classes (flyweight, bantamweight, super bantamweight and featherweight). Donaire most recently lost his WBO super bantamweight title against Jessie Magdaleno last year on the Manny Pacquiao vs. Jessie Vargas pay-per-view card. The fight against Hernandez is Donaire’s first since signing a promotional deal with Richard Schaefer’s Ringstar Sports.

Hernandez is 22-2-1 as a pro boxer, but since losing to Randy Caballero, Hernandez has won all seven of his last fights against very subpar competition. All seven of Hernandez’s opponents currently do not have a winning record as a pro boxer.

Donaire will be moving up in weight back to featherweight and the fight will be for the vacant WBC Silver featherweight title.
