Evan Husney On The Possibility Of Releasing Unreleased Dark Side Of The Ring Interviews: ‘Maybe There Is A Path For That, It Would Be Really Cool’
Evan Husney on the possibility of releasing unreleased interviews.
Dark Side of the Ring’s Season 7 is premiering with a two-hour episode covering TNA. Throughout the years, multiple wrestlers and other wrestling personalities have been interviewed for the show. Only a small part of these interviews makes it to the final edit, so there’s a lot of material that hasn’t seen the light of day.
Speaking with Sean Ross Sapp of Fightful, Evan Husney says there’s an insane amount of unreleased footage from Dark Side of the Ring.
“It’s crazy. I don’t know what the current number of hours of footage is, but I’ve done the math maybe last year and it’s staggering. Then to do the math and realize that only 4 % of that has ever aired on TV is crazy. You just have so much stuff. We have an entire library. We do reference it from time to time. Occasionally, if someone said something better in the past, maybe we can look at it, but for the most part we try to only let it really like inform what we’re doing and trying to formulate the new interviews that we’re doing.
Sometimes we’ve had episodes where like, ‘Oh, yeah, we got this guy to talk on this subject maybe three years ago and we can run it in there and it will work.’ We’ve done that maybe on one hand we’ve done that, but there’s so much out there and you could make an argument this is this whole experience of making the show has just been kind of gathering wrestling history and building an archive and capturing it while these guys are still here and able to tell their stories firsthand. Because sadly, unfortunately, we do have a lot of last interviews of people that are no longer with us. I cherish not only the memories of doing that, but the fact that we were able to get their stories in long form and have them it’s great.”
Later, he talks about the possibility of releasing all this footage.
“Maybe there is a path for that. It would be really cool. To hear Road Warrior Animal’s interview, I think that was his last interview, he passed away shortly after that. I think New Jack was like a year after we did the interview and his long form interview is like, you could show that in movie theaters. It’s so compelling. I think there is a road. Maybe we could do something like that. We did a podcast over last two seasons of Dark Side, where it was myself and the guys from the Lapsed Fan podcast, where we hosted and went back and picked little nuggets and little self-contained stories that were left on the cutting room floor. That was fun. But I think maybe audience members don’t want to hear me yapping about it. They just want to see the goods. But there was some funny stuff in there that I had forgotten from years ago. But there’s a lot of gold in the archives, I should say.”
Elsewhere in the interview, Husney says he was shocked to see TNA’s story needed three hours’ worth of programming. Fans can read his comments here.
