Archaeologists Believe 2,400-Year-Old Tomb Belonged To Pro Wrestler
Archaeologists believe they have uncovered the real grave of an ancient professional wrestler in Turkey.
According to Live Science, a 2,400-year-old tomb was found during excavations at the ancient city of Aspendos in southwest Turkey.
Researchers discovered a skeleton alongside silver coins showing wrestlers inside the tomb. Turkey’s Culture and Tourism Minister Mehmet Nuri Ersoy said the coins and other objects suggest the person “may have been involved in sports, perhaps even a wrestler.”
The grave dates from between roughly 475 and 300 BC.
Aspendos was known for producing silver coins that featured two wrestlers grappling on one side. The coins were minted for more than a century. Aspendos later built a stadium capable of holding around 8,000 spectators for wrestling, footraces and javelin contests.
There is not enough evidence to confirm the person inside the tomb was actually a wrestler.
