In 2002, Steve Austin and Brock Lesnar were set to meet on WWE Raw in a King of the Ring qualifying match. The bout was not built on television and seemingly a last minute addition to the show.
The match never happened as Austin infamously left the company. On television, it was said that Austin "took his ball and went home." Lesnar would go on to win the 2002 King of the Ring, further launching him into superstardom.
Appearing on the Pat McAfee Show, Lesnar reflected on Austin's decision to leave at the time.
"I understand from a business aspect at the time, Steve left and didn't want to work with me. It was probably the right decision for him at the time. I don't hold a grudge against it at all. Business is business. I had a lot of good mentors coming up in the business," he said.
Lesnar and Austin would eventually work together in some capacity as Austin served as the special guest referee for Lesnar's bout against Goldberg at WrestleMania 20, which would be Lesnar's last match in the company before he left.
Lesnar is still on top of the WWE world and in the WWE Title picture heading into Elimination Chamber while WWE is reportedly making overtures towards Austin for a return at WrestleMania 38.
