John Cena Says The John Cena Classic Could Be WWE’s Version Of The All-Star Game

At WWE Backlash, John Cena announced the John Cena Classic, a new tournament that will pit main roster superstars against NXT superstars.

A champion will be crowned in the tournament, but through a fan vote and not wins and losses.

Speaking to Shakiel Mahjouri of CBS Sports, Cena gave more insight into the idea.

“In a business where everybody says that every story has been told before, I want to swim for something new. Of course, I believe in sports entertainment meritocracy, and I believe WWE is an excellent meritocracy. Every statement I say, there are going to be multiple sides of that.

“I know I dropped a lot of information at Backlash. To sum it up in a sentence, it could be a version of WWE’s All-Star game. It’s a night of exhibition, so we don’t have to build many long stories. It is the current, competing with, and it might mean they are paired with, who knows, the bracketology is endless. They could be paired with or up against the future of the company.

“If you steal the show, maybe you’re not lucky enough to get your hand raised, every participant qualifies for kind of a fan All-Star vote, so you could be recognized as the night’s champion. I’ve heard the perspective of ‘wins and losses don’t matter.’ That’s a very valid point. We have to figure out the fan vote. There is still a lot to be done. You can vote for the winners. You can also vote for everybody. That’s a first time. In an announcement this big, there is a lot of history being made. We’re coming up with a new event, a new championship, giving NXT people a chance to face WWE people, fans are gonna be able to vote and everybody qualifies. That’s a lot of information to cover in a five-minute interview. I expected questions. It’s really exciting. I’m trying to do something new, and that’s going to come with praise and critique.”

Further details on the tournament have yet to be announced.
