TAELER: New AEW Women's Champion Crowned at Double or Nothing

AEW's Double or Nothing PPV marks the end of one era in the AEW Women's Division and ushers in an entirely new one. Much to the chagrin of some. While others froth at the mouth to get the chance to take the prestigious gold for themselves. As is the way of talented athletes and the art of competition. As many fans tuned in live to watch the PPV unfold, they were treated to an insane AEW Women's Championship bout. AEW fans flocked to social media all weekend long leading up to Double or Nothing choosing sides in support for whom they wanted to come out on top in the battle for the new AEW Women's Title. Hikaru Shida or Britt Baker… The Champion or The Doctor…

With the tone set. The intent of the competitors known. The goal the same while the means to that end polar opposite - the battle was on! A battle perhaps, if I may be so bold as to say, perhaps one of the biggest yet in the AEW Women's Division. A championship bout between two clashing titans representing AEW's growing Women's Division. The then reigning and defending AEW Women's Champion, Hikaru Shida and the challenger, Dr. Britt Baker, DMD.

As the match would unfold the fans were delighted in seeing their expectations for this match were indeed fulfilled. These two incredibly talented ladies did not disappoint and were a huge highlight on the PPV. They went to war over the coveted AEW Women's Championship. A key interference from Rebel that backfired would indirectly be the turning point leading towards the finish with Britt Baker doing the unthinkable and submitting the longest AEW Champion ever in AEW.

Hikaru Shida would experience the full wrath of The Doctor and tapped to Baker's signature Lock Jaw submission. An enviable textbook attempt by Shida to reverse out of the Lock Jaw with a counter crucifix pin was undone in a way that I love seeing from a heel like Britt Baker. Baker would roll through and use the natural momentum to maintain her hold and thus ended the over 365+ day reign of the former AEW Women's Champion Hikaru Shida. This is not to say that Hikaru Shida didn't put up a fight because she most certainly did! She brought everything she had at Baker, but in the end it just wasn't enough.

The reign of Shida has come to an end. At Double or Nothing Britt Baker cemented her own legacy in the AEW history books as the woman to do what no other managed to accomplish in over a year - dethrone Hikaru Shida. Not only did Britt Baker write her own name into the AEW record-breaking books, in this monumental career highlighting win, she also reaffirmed exactly what AEW saw in her and why they jumped to sign her back in 2019.

Now The Doctor is in and a new era begins for the AEW Women's Division. The rest of the ladies be warned. As I previously reported on Fightful.com the next big opportunity to get at the AEW Women's Title will be the returning signature match, the AEW Women's Casino Battle Royale. The very match that led to the downfall of the first and youngest AEW Women's Champion, Riho by way of The Beast Nyla Rose. At this point, I think it's safe to say that AEW is now synonymous with three new letters, and they are D-M-D…
