While two-thirds of The Rascalz went to WWE, Trey Miguel stayed behind.
On December 2, 2020 WWE announced the latest Performance Center recruiting class, which included Dezmond Xavier and Zachary Wentz of The Rascalz. Noticeably absent was Trey Miguel.
On a conference call ahead of NXT TakeOver: WarGames, Triple H said about Trey not signing, "I do not want to talk about why people are or are not here, there’s obviously a lot that goes into all of that, but for me, the people that do come here, it’s seeing the heart and the passion. That’s really what it comes down to; it’s a passion business, you have to be all in."
Trey took to social media shortly after Triple H's comments to say, "I feel like it is worth mentioning AGAIN that a month and a half ago my Nephew was born prematurely and is in isolated care until what would have been his actual due date. Meeting a healthy baby boy is more important to me than anything else. I’m sure you all can respect that."
Dez and Wentz would debut as Nash Carter (Zachary Wentz) and Wes Lee (Dezmond Xavier), using the tag team name of MSK on the January 13 episode of NXT. Meanwhile, Trey returned to IMPACT on the January 26 episode as a mystery partner alongside Tommy Dreamer, Rich Swann, and Willie Mack.
Appearing on Wilde On, Trey elaborated on his decision to not join WWE.
"Zach is married and Dez is engaged now. They just need wrestling in a different way right now. They need [wrestling] to do different things for them than I do. I don't mean to make it seem like I'm speaking bad about IMPACT, they ran out of things to do with The Rascalz. There's no need in staying if there's nothing to do. I have ideas for IMPACT and things I want to do and things that I didn't get done yet. I don't want to leave without getting that done. IMPACT also affords me the luxury of being able to stay home, which is super duper important to me because we have a wrestling school here. I'm one of the head trainers and I'm there every single day. I'm so close to the kids we have there and the other trainers. I have a lot of family here. Wrestling has my heart more than anything in the world, but there's so much personally that I can't pull myself away from my family right now. I can't do that. I have a brother that passed away in 2013. It's life. My oldest brother just had my most recent nephew and he was born two months premature because his mother fell ill, so they actually induced her. He's home now, but he was in isolated care for two months. They named him after my late brother. I couldn't imagine moving to fucking Orlando a month after this little miracle. That's not it for me. It's not like if I don't go to Orlando, I don't get to wrestle anymore. I still get to wrestle more than anyone at NXT. I train whenever I want," he said.
Trey specifically singled out Alex Shelley, who was someone he wanted to work with and looked up to and who he now considers a big brother because Shelley helped him out with more than just wrestling.
"It wasn't easy, just having Dez and Zach being...taken out of my life, almost. Zach was a two-hour drive away and now we don't get to wrestle each other anymore. The Rascalz aren't a thing anymore. That's been really rough on me," he said. "I've had so many bouts with depression. It's not a secret and [Shelley] relates to that. He was there and knew it without me having to say a thing. Every day has been an endless conversation about mental health and wrestling. I honestly think he saved my life. I think that's more full circle than having a dream to just be a WWE superstar. My favorite wrestler is now my big brother."
