UFC 272 Highlights: Colby Covington Defeats Jorge Masivdal Over Five Rounds

An underwhelming UFC 272 card on paper, predictably failed to deliver in the ring, as both the main and co-main events went 25 minutes and lacked drama after the midway point. Check out the highlights from those fights as well as the rest of the card after the jump.

Colby Covington def. Jorge Masvidal via Unanimous Decision (50-44, 50-45, 49-46)

UFC superstars who love soccer and their favourite clubs

In a dull fight, lacking in any degree of drama, Colby Covington dominated Jorge Masvidal over five rounds to get the decision victory. Covington used his typical aggressive approach and hunted takedowns in each of the rounds, and spent long stretches in top position. While the fight wasn't a total blowout, it was pretty apparent which way this fight would go by the 3rd round, so it lacked drama.

Rafael dos Anjos def. Renato Moicano via Unanimous Decision (50-44, 49-44, 49-45)

On short notice, Renato Moicano stopped in against Rafael dos Anjos over five rounds, and got absolutely obliterated. Dos Anjos completely dominated the entire fight, spending the majority of the fight in top position crushing Moicano with ground and pound. Complete one way traffic four four rounds, until RDA took his foot off the gas in the final round. Its fairly outrageous that Moicano was forced to take two extra rounds of damage, this fight should've been stopped multiple times during the 3rd and 4th, and Moicano's could've thrown in the towel at any time.

Bryce Mitchell def. Edson Barbosa via Unanimous Decision (30-25, 30-26, 30-27)

Bryce Mitchell completely dominated Edson Barbosa to win by decision. Mitchell scored a knockkdown in the first round, and got takedowns in the two subsequent rounds and never gave up top control. Barbosa largely kept his guard closed, and allowed Mitchell to crush him with ground and pound and cut him open. An eye-opening win for Mitchell that should set him up for a top contender fight in his future. Note that the 30-27 scorecard is outrageous. Mitchell had at least one, if not two 10-8 rounds in this fight.

Kevin Holland def. Alex Oliveira via TKO (Elbows) (Rd. 2 0:28)

In a banger of a fight, Kevin Holland and Alex Oliveira went to war that saw Holland emerge early in the second round with the stoppage victory. After a close first round that likely favored Oliveira, Holland came out early in the second, and rocked 'Cowboy' with a short right hand, and shredded him with some heavy elbows from ground and pound. Holland is an interesting fighter now that he's dropped to welterweight.

Sergey Spivak def. Greg Hardy via TKO (Punches) (Rd. 1 2:16)

Sergey Spivak obliterated and hopefully ended the UFC career of Greg Hardy in the first round. Hardy came out throwing heavy low-kicks, which was put to and end when Spivak was able to take Hardy down repeatedly. After rag-dolling Hardy multiple times, Spivak got mount position and crushed him with ground and pound.

Jalin Turner def. Jamie Mullarkey via TKO (Punches) (Rd. 2 0:47)

Jalin Turner continues to announce himself as a lightweight contender, extending his winning streak to four with a stoppage victory over Jamie Mullarkey. Turner's 6'3 frame at lightweight is incredibly imposing, and he showcased his lethal striking, as well as his very impressive takedown defense. Turner is one to watch.

Marina Rodriguez def. Yan Xaionan via Split Decision (29-28, 29-28, 28-29)

In an excellent bout between strawweight contenders, Marina Rodriguez edged out a very thin decision victory over Yan Xaionan. Highly recommend finding the fight, because it was excellent, and really could've gone either way. Just an extremely high level kickboxing bout, that likely sets Marina Rodriguez on track for a strawweight title fight.

Nicolae Negumereanu def Kennedy Nzechukwu fought to a Majority Decision (29-27, 29-27, 27-29)

In a dull foul-filled fight, Nicolae Negumereanu edged a controversial majority decision over Kennedy Nzechukwu. Nzechukwu seemed to control most of the fight with his massive reach and height advantage, but was deducted a point for repeatedly poking Negumereanu in the eye. I'm baffled by the scorecards in favor for Negumereanu, I thought Nzechukwu won every second he wasn't poking his opponent in the eye.

Maryna Moroz def. Mariya Agapova via Submission (Arm-Triangle Choke (Rd. 2 3:27)

In a flyweight grudge match, Maryna Moroz utilized her superior grappling to get the victory over Mariya Agapova. Moroz worked a takedown in the first round and threatened with a rear-naked choke, and it was more of the same in the second round before she found the finish. Post-fight, Moroz made an emotional speech about her war-torn homeland.

Umar Nurmagomedov def. Brian Kelleher via Submission (Rear-Naked Choke) (Rd. 1 3:15)

In a highly impressive performance, Umar Nurmagomedov quickly disposed of Brian Kelleher via rear-naked choke. The Dagestani prospect now moves to 14-0 overall, and 2-0 inside the UFC, could be one to watch talent-rich bantamweight division.

Tim Elliot def. Tagir Ulanbekov via Unanimous Decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28)

In an excellent gem on the undercard, Tim Elliott used his unique scrambling style to edge out Tagir Ulanbekov in a fight between ranked flyweights.

Ludovit Klein def. Devonte Smith via Split Decision (30-27, 29-28, 28-29)

In a razor-thin decision victory Ludovit Klein got the edge over Devonte Smith.

Dustin Jacoby def. Michał Oleksiejczuk via Unanimous Decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28)

In an action back and forth fight, Dustin Jacoby earned a comeback decision victory over Poland's Michał Oleksiejczuk.
